Dave Turner
Alto saxophone
A native of Montreal, alto saxophonist and composer Dave Turner has been a mainstay of that city's jazz scene since the mid 1970's. He has performed extensively with his own groups in the Montreal area and has been a featured performer at every major jazz festival in Canada. Dave Turner has also been a featured soloist and Lead Alto with the Vic Vogel Big Band since 1979.
Jazz notables he has performed with include Art Blakey, Dizzy Gillespie, Joe Morello, Zoot Sims, Jimmy Heath, Mel Torme, Ronnia Mathews, and Eddie Martinez.
Dave Turner has recorded nine CDs as a leader, all of which have received wide critical acclaim. His CD "Cafe Alto" was nominated for a Juno award as Jazz Recording of the year in 1987.
In 1996, he was honoured as alto saxophonist of the year by Jazz Report magazine. In 1995 he was the recipient of a teaching excellence award from Concordia University for his work in the Jazz Studies program, where he has been a faculty member since 1982.
